Do Blow Off Valves Actually Increase Horsepower?

Many car enthusiasts love the sound of a blow off valve (BOV). That loud “psshh” noise when shifting gears has become a symbol of turbocharged performance cars. But one common question is: does a blow off valve actually increase horsepower?

The short answer is: not directly.

A blow off valve is mainly designed to protect the turbo system, not to create more power. When you release the throttle on a turbocharged car, pressure builds up between the turbo and the throttle body. Without a BOV, that pressure has nowhere to go and can push back against the turbo compressor. This is called compressor surge, and over time it may reduce turbo lifespan.

The blow off valve releases this excess pressure into the air (or recirculates it back into the intake system), helping the turbo keep spinning smoothly during gear changes.

So where does horsepower come into the discussion?

A high-quality blow off valve can improve turbo response and help maintain boost pressure between shifts. This may make the car feel faster and smoother, especially on modified turbo vehicles. However, the actual horsepower gain is usually very small or even unnoticeable on a stock car.

On heavily modified engines running higher boost levels, an upgraded BOV can become more important. Factory valves sometimes leak under high pressure, causing boost loss. In this case, replacing the stock valve with a stronger aftermarket blow off valve may help the engine hold boost more efficiently, which can indirectly support better performance.

Another important point is tuning. Some cars use MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensors, and installing an atmospheric blow off valve without proper tuning can actually cause problems like:

Rich fuel mixtures
Rough idle
Stalling
Reduced performance

That’s why choosing the correct type of BOV for your setup is important.

In the end, most people install a blow off valve for:

Better turbo sound
Improved throttle response
Turbo protection
Supporting higher boost setups

Not simply for extra horsepower.

If your goal is big power gains, upgrades like a better turbocharger, intercooler, fuel system, and ECU tune will have a much bigger impact than a blow off valve alone.
