How Do I Know If My Fuel Pump Is Going Bad?

A failing fuel pump can cause many drivability problems, especially on turbocharged or high-mileage vehicles. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel from the tank to the engine at the correct pressure. When it starts to fail, your car may not run smoothly or may even stop running completely.

One of the most common signs of a bad fuel pump is hard starting. If your engine takes longer to start than usual, especially in the morning, the fuel pump may not be building enough pressure.

Another common symptom is loss of power during acceleration. Many drivers notice hesitation, jerking, or weak acceleration when pressing the throttle. This is especially common on turbocharged cars or vehicles with upgraded performance parts.

You may also hear a loud whining noise from the fuel tank. Normally, fuel pumps make a quiet humming sound. If the noise becomes much louder, it could mean the pump is working too hard or starting to wear out.
