What Size Throttle Body Is Best for 300HP?

When people start building a 300HP street car, one of the most common upgrades is the throttle body. But many drivers quickly realize there is an important question: how big should the throttle body actually be?

A lot of people think bigger always means more power. In reality, choosing the correct size is much more important than simply buying the largest throttle body available.

For most engines around 300 horsepower, a 70mm throttle body is usually one of the best choices. It offers better airflow than the factory throttle body while still keeping good drivability for daily use.

After upgrading to a 70mm throttle body, many drivers notice the car feels more responsive. The engine reacts faster when pressing the accelerator, and the car feels more alive during acceleration. Especially at mid and high RPM, airflow becomes smoother and the engine can breathe more easily.

However, bigger is not always better.

Some people install very large throttle bodies expecting huge horsepower gains, but if the engine setup is mostly stock, the difference may actually be small. In some cases, an oversized throttle body can even make the car harder to drive smoothly. The throttle may become too sensitive, low-speed driving can feel jerky, and idle quality may become less stable.

That is why many experienced builders prefer a balanced setup instead of simply choosing the biggest size possible.

For a typical 300HP build, throttle body sizes usually range between 68mm and 72mm, with 70mm sitting right in the middle. This size works well for both naturally aspirated and mild turbocharged applications.

Of course, the throttle body alone will not magically create horsepower. To fully benefit from the upgrade, many people combine it with supporting modifications such as a cold air intake, intake manifold upgrade, performance exhaust system, or ECU tuning. When these parts work together, airflow improves much more effectively.

Another reason why 70mm throttle bodies are popular is because they still maintain comfortable daily driving behavior. The car feels sportier and more responsive without becoming overly aggressive or difficult to control in traffic.

For street performance cars, balance is often more important than extreme specifications. A properly matched throttle body can improve airflow, throttle response, and driving enjoyment while still keeping the vehicle smooth and reliable.
